THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER
Some say gray is dull and drab
yet
it’s the color of the early morning
fog that rests gently in the valleys
of the Great Smoky Mountains.
it’s the color of the nimbus clouds
that skid across summer skies, their
bellies filled with welcome rains
for gardens and fields.
it’s the hair color of our seniors,
signaling their cumulative years of
service and knowledge, giving of
life and self to those who come after.
Sometimes we need to see color
in a different light.
Indeed, sometimes we just need to open our eyes (use our brains and hearts) and see. Things, circumstances, and people have so many layers. We should always remember that bit of light.
ReplyDeleteLove your tribute to grey!
ReplyDeleteThe Great Smoky Mountains wouldn't be the same without the word "smoke," which is gray! Or grey. I don't think I ever spell it the same way time to time! My living room and hallway are grey, called "Essential Shade." And, yes, grey is the color of the wise, even as the bible says!
ReplyDeleteThe gray sky does have it's charms. Different from her blue sibling, but still enchanting.
ReplyDeleteI love gray, black and white and Earl Gray!
ReplyDeleteHow timely! Just finished reading an article in the New York Times about color, the pandemic, being trapped in our homes and how folks everywhere are arming themselves with paint brushes and paint colors created for cheering them up ...... my oldest son in a phone conversation a bit ago said 'Mom they're probably re-painting every six to eight weeks!' Thus far, I have not succumbed.
ReplyDeleteA lovely re-thinking of grey. Personally I have always loved silver hair, and was thrilled when mine finally turned that colour.
ReplyDeleteNicely written, especially the conclusion. :D
ReplyDeleteGreat meditation on a much maligned color.
ReplyDeleteLike Rosemary my hair is grey too, I don't mind it a bit so hopefully I can hang on to it.
ReplyDeleteYes we do need to see colour in a different light...especially in the USA...Very clever subtle poem
ReplyDelete"their bellies filled with welcome rains for gardens and fields" - love it! As a pluviophile, the line appeals to me tremendously.
ReplyDeleteFor me grey hair is now a sign of good health (the white falls out during glyphosate reactions), so naturally I applaud those who embrace the grey. Lovely thoughts!
