WANTS AND GETS

Writers' Pantry #46   A cold, sunny morning in my world.  I find myself feeling restricted, constricted, and conflicted.  My father's words come to haunt me.   Submitted to Poets & Storytellers United, November 29, 2020.

I want to escape this isolation

Take myself to some foreign nation

Where folks are frolicking bare-faced

I want to amble through a well stocked aisle

Of latest fashions where trinkets  beguile

And my cash in hand is well-placed.

I want to take myself out for the night

To some spot of gastronomical delight

And perhaps a cocktail or two

But My father’s wisdom is giving me fits

I hear his voice saying “Wants are not gets”

And, dammit, I know it’s true.

  1. Wise father. You'll get them, hopefully in the not to distance future! I remind myself "The entire world is undergoing the same thing." Especially when I hear that "our" children will be behind. No, they will be fine, just throw out the standardized testing for 2020 and 2021.

  2. My dad's favorite saying fits too. Almost only counts in horeshoes (the game)!

  3. My father always asked me, is it a want or a need? Around six I started telling him, it is a need. I need this book! He laughed. But as we grow older, we learn to not be so spend thrift. I have traveled to places around the world and I have found, the best place is home. I liked this poem Beverly. It is true.

  4. Many parents worldwide seem to agree that "wants are not gets." Mine emphasized the same thing to me numerous times.

Al fresco dinners are some of my favorite parts of travel.

  5. Fathers can be very wise creatures, can't they? Still, the wants can be so persistent. Maybe we'll get lucky, and wants and gets can be one in the same soon enough.

    Love the rhythm.

  8. What is so hard is the foolishness of others who seem to deny the dangers and put others lives in danger. Here in Australia where Covid has been under a fair amound of control there are still those that act without care to spread the virus carelessly.

  11. Yes...A friend told me that in Taiwan they have not had a Corona case since April and people are moving there to be able to resume their lives. I think we are all dreaming of what was...and hoping that it will be again. Love your piece.
