THERE'S AN APP FOR IT

Keeping up with modern technology in my advanced years is challenging, and the business of parking has been added to the list. We’re asked to use a line from a poem by Jo Hanjo in our prosery, the line being “Crucial to finding the way is this.  There is no beginning or end” Recently my son and wife took me to dinner in an artsy section of our city, where I learned a bit about apps.  My prosery is submitted  to Monday Prosery at dVerse.

                                                    THERE’S AN APP FOR IT

My grandfather used to ride his horse to town, tie it to the hitching post in front of the general store where he “shot the breeze” with his cronies and played wicked games of checkers.  Then came the advent of parking meters---those metal sentinels with coin slots to enable us to pay for the privilege of parking.

Recently, we pulled into a parking spot in one of the artsy sections of my city.  My daughter-in-law raised her right hand (to which her phone seemed always to be attached), and entered the number that appeared on our parking meter.  Then she entered the estimated time we intended to be parked there, and said “We’re good to go!”  No coins needed.  When I asked how that worked, her answer was, “There’s an app for it”.

When it comes to apps, it seems crucial to finding the way is this----there is no beginning or end..   Now I admit my aging mind goes on strange journeys, so as we made our way into the restaurant I considered that now there seems to be an “app” for everything.  When I tire of this earthly veil, I wondered, and it’s time for me to pass on to the what-comes-next, will there be an app for it?  Will I be able to enter a couple of numbers on my phone and POUF! I’ll be gone?  Something to think about.

  1. Something to think about indeed! πŸ˜€
There do seem to be apps for everything. I haven't used a parking app, but they make sense--except for when they don't work.

  2. Smiling I am....oh yes indeed. There seems to be an app for everything! Did you know there's even an app to photo shop our photos to take out wrinkles and make us look like we're in glamor make-up? At least I think there is. How else can some of my friends ALWAYS look glamorous in every post they make??? :)

  3. Beverly,
I couldn't help but grin at this. What a perfectly fitting reverie as we gallop without the aid of horses just apps into the future! I think I would feel a little nervous making an appointment with death with an app. If I can track him, he may track me faster than I want.

  4. This is incredibly heartfelt! πŸ’ I agree, nowadays there is an app for literally everything one can imagine. I recently came across one that predicted the size, shape and gender of a baby by merely entering the details of your partner. How weird is that?!

  5. What a world we're living in eh? Great approach to the prompt, Beverly!

  6. I love it! Scary how everyone depends on apps rather than their own intelligence to do things these days. We went to a restaurant the first time after covid and on the table was a card with a barcode box. Use your smart phone to get the menu... duh! I asked for paper!

  7. Oh my gosh, Bev, you are too funny. I agree! Too many apps and some take longer to use than the "old" ways. Last night I went in circles on a restaurant app that asked me for my fingerprint. Huh? Then it asked for my PIN number....for my fingerprint? What next? Poof!

  8. Apps just run down the battery on my phone lately. Little energy suckers! You worked the quote in well here!

  9. A nice light-hearted take on the prompt Beverly! I discovered the parking app last week. But I'm the kind of person who would forget to clock out, and end up paying for 6 months' parking...

  10. Bev, this is so CUTE! And you know what? I'm 41 and feel this way sometimes too!

    Yours,

  11. I can identify with this. The less technology, the better as far as I'm concerned.

  12. Scary food for thought!!!! I do not like using apps, rarely do. Of course I am almost 80 ... you know the drill, Bev!!

  13. I think there are good apps and bad ones... I still keep up with it (except for the ones for parking)... I wonder if there will be an app for my funeral services... (actually I think there is a service to change your digital presence to a digital cemetery (and one day there will be an app for that)

Love this thinking Bev! It gives way to a way out dilemma. A thrill to those who seek an easy way of a planned and perhaps a legal suicide by then - for whatever reasons

  15. Oh yes indeed Beverly, will there be an app for that? Love how you have drawn that out. In my more immature moments I want an app that provides rude gestures to parking meter authorities.
