AGAIN

Wednesday Scribblings, and we’re asked
to be inspired by a play list choice.  I
chose “For What It’s Worth” by Buffalo
Springfield, struck by how timely it is,
as if written today. This newspaper headline
is from 1968, and could be today. Sadly, it
seems we’ve learned nothing in all these years.

***********************

Stop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down
       AGAIN

A rhousand people in the street
Carrying signs and singing songs
       AGAIN

There’s a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
      AGAIN

Mothers cry and sons die
We’re living 1967
      AGAIN

Sixty years of learning nothing
Empty promises of doing something
     AGAIN

We cry JUSTICE! Weed out hate!
Pray for change before it’s too late
      AMEN

  2. Oh my aching heart this is poignant. The emotions in this poem are so palpable that I am shaking all the way over here. May there be change, may there be peace. Amen. Thank you so much for writing to the prompt, Beverly 💘

  3. Gosh, that's a sobering reflection! I like the change in your final line, from 'Again' to 'Amen'. May it be so, indeed.

  4. Humans don't learn easily do they? They live in huge packs but are jealous and hate each other.

  5. I hope any grandchildren I have won't have to go through this again in another 60 years. I hope real progress and fundamental change can be made. It's clear we'll have to make them on our own, as the imbecile in chief isn't going to do anything other than make things worse.

  6. Your poem is thoughtful and reflects what you and I and others of our generation have witnessed. I hope Robin is wrong about humans, but I do wonder. We can hope, we can pray, we can do.

  9. I liked this, Beverly, you picked a good song. You have made me think, lots of bases covered. I am all for the protests and am sooo glad to see so many, many non-Blacks at it. Our next youngest granddaughter was there, at D C, where we tracked her cell phone come right up to the White House. In my single days what was there much to do except ride around. The Lincoln, NE, police harrassed us something awful. And in my college days, the first session, I marched in a couple of student protes, aka 'riots'.
My past has been very colorful in many ways, good and soso.
Oh yes, I am on Sabbatical again. I fell way behind on comment returns and plan on abstaining for a couple or so weeks. But I hope to continue with my Friday meme blog.
