BRIGADOON

Weekly Scribblings #79.  Since I first saw the musical in the 1970s, I've been fascinated with the idea of Brigadoon...a magical place.  Submitted to Poets and Storytellers United, July 22, 2021

BRIGADOON

I long to have a Brigadoon

That magic village

Where there are no cares

And all is joy and laughter

Wouldn’t that be great

Isn’t that what we’re all after?

Alas there may be no

Magic village for me

No escape from cares

No surcease from my tears

For Brigadoon only appears

Every one hundred years.

Every one hundred years.

  2. We get locked in the "California Hotel"(song) situation quite frequently. In 2004 the cast, part of it, part local, one of our Houston theatres put it on. I remember the crossing into Brigadoon but that's about all. One of the times we were in Scotland we stopped in Ayrshire and walked the bridge, "Brig o' Doon", which is now pedestrian and in a park-like setting. While in town we bought a book, "The Complete works of Robert Frost," from the museum and bookstore next to his birthplace home.

    1. The Ayrshire town was Alloway, I can never remember that.

    2. You startled me, Jim! But I looked up Robert Frost the American poet and found he was born in San Francisco. So I thought you must mean some Scottish writer of the same name. But then I had a sudden brainwave and looked up Robert Burns – sure enough, he hailed from Ayrshire.

  3. Dear Bev, I loved Brigadoon; have seen it a few times, actually. Something to dream of, even if we can't really find it.

Btw I had trouble posting a comment here just now, until I switched browsers. (See also my comment to you at the P&SU post.)

  4. Ahhh, such hopelessness. Your point was clear. I’m still cheering for a resting place.

    1. I didn't mean to sound hopeless!! I've a good life for which I'm grateful. It's just nice to think of a Brigadoon day, however!

  5. I think I saw Brigadoon with Gene Kelly and then later with Robert Goulet. One I liked better than the other but I can't remember for sure which one... Robert Goulet I think.
