LADY MOONGLOW

It's Tuesday Poetics, and Lillian has given us a site that lists the #1 hits in the year of our birth, and challenges us to use that title in our poem.  I'm not sure whether to be insulted, to weep or laugh.  I am apparently so old the calendar at the site begins in l940 when I was 6 years old!  I had to look elsewhere to discover #1 in my birth year was "Moon Glow" by.Benny Goodman.  But along the way I wondered why we consider the moon to be masculine.  Submitted to dVerse, 9/20/21

**************

Why do we say man in the moon

Why not lady of midnight

Could the moon cast her moonglow

On objects below

Could she send her magic moonlight

Moonbeaming lovers in the dark

Who says that's not right

Being the queen of romance

and star-studded dance

Could we just for once say

The lady shines tonight?

  1. LOVE this! Certainly did not mean to insult you with the site.....I was born in 1947 and I think I was lucky the site started there, I believe. However, I couldn't find it in myself to use the words Goodnight Irene in a poem :) SO GLAD you posted to the prompt! And oh yes....I shall now look up at the full moon and see that glorious lady in the moon! I SO agree with your premise here :) Anything that glows that brightly, creates a glisten path on the ocean, and always returns, even when fading to just a sliver....well, it just has to be feminine in gender....we persevere and always shine our light!

  5. Only a man thinks the moon could be masculine... I like your questions and how you wrote to them.

  6. Bev, why not indeed? I'm fully in support of your idea :)

  11. Moonglow is one of my favorite songs ... ever. I remember (vividly) dancing to it when I was in the seventh grade ... a day-cruise on a steamer down the Mississippi. A dance floor and a real orchestra!!!!!!

  12. I think the moon is considered feminine for many cultures. Love your image and verse, I think she is definitely a romantic girl! πŸŒ™πŸŒπŸŒ™
