MIDNIGHT EPIPHANIES

Weekly Scribblings.  Magaly has asked us to write from the point of viewof a character hunting or being hunted.  I'm the hunter, always hunting inspiration for a worthwhile poem, usually at night when I'm trying to get to sleep.  Submitted this in error at Writers' Pantry.  Here is it in its proper place!  Submitted May 12, 2021

       MIDNIGHT EPIPHANIES

I’m a dreamer by day and a thinker by night and,

when I lay me down to sleep, will-o-the-whispers

wander in and out of my thoughts in a rustle of

satin and silken swish, flinging words and phrases

like tangled skeins spun by some shape-shifter’s loom.

Carousels and chapel bells, cowboy boots

and vagabond’s loot, lamp shades and nines of spades,

ballet slippers and champagne sippers, smooth talkers

and sky walkers drift through my mind on their way

to some future poetic adventure.  Occasionally there

springs from this abyss of word salad, a midnight

epiphany worth recording in my bedside journal, and

turning into what I hope is a poem of interest, making

for a happy hunter.

Ah, bliss!

  1. I absolutely love this! What a rich mind you have!

Actually Rommy was giving us advance notice of what Magaly will be asking from us next Wednesday – and I'm sure you'll have not the slightest trouble rising to the theme again, in a completely new way.

    1. I see now I leapt ahead to Wednesday. Don't know how to fix it now. Just consider it a brain blip!

  4. I like to think that many writers have this attitude and ability to be able to turn out poetry and stories with consumate ease.

  5. an inspiration hunter, that so aptly described it.
i used to write late at night, and not so anymore. perhaps age doesn't allow one to keep up. i still keep some paper/notebook and pen handy when i sleep, but those epiphanies seem to be keeping a distance. :)

You don't do so bad when you are awake either! I love your imagination and rhyming thoughts.

  9. I love how the structure is perfect for the theme, especially the second stanza--the listing reminds me a lot of the process my own mind goes through at night, so many thoughts trying to stick and become in more... and when they do become, "Ah, bliss!"

  12. Beautiful, Beverly!! Especially those internal rhyming pairs that "drift through my (your) mind on their way to some future poetic adventure. . ." I often sit on the bed's edge, with smart old Galaxy 8 machine in hand, and compose or outline a writing or work on my Friday blog on my other blog site. Mrs. Jim is watching old "Murder she wrote" recordings as they put her to sleep. I lay down and sleep right away if I wait until I'm tired.
That is not our every night, but near. I might work on a Soduko puzzle, I don't do games or puzzles on the computer or smartphone.
In a Nutshell. I really like this poem, like I said the rhyming portion sealed it.
