IRONY

Writers Pantry #82  Sometimes you just contemplate life and wonder at the irony of it all.  This was one of those times...a quirky mood, a quirky poem.   Submitted to Poets & Storytellers United, August 8, 2021

                                                                    IRONY

On the dark backstreets of the inner city,  where home is a cardboard box and hope is a forgotten memory, stories are traded by the citizens of the night,  fueled by alcohol and drugs with a mantra of betrayal and rejection, if onlys and I wish I hads.

A block away the privileged have the valet park their Cadillac and the concierge take their luggage to their room in the luxury hotel.  Time to celebrate.

Somewhere in the burbs,  a guy pops a Blatz and settles in his worn recliner to watch the Saturday night ball game.

Life in the city.............

  1. How easily we miss the experience of our fellow humans when we are too wrapped up in our own world.

  2. I can hear this recited as the intro to a tv show or film …. Wonderful write, Bev! Yes the boots are still around.

  3. I think the quirkiness might've gotten a tad serious. It's hard to see the social disparities and not feel for the have-nots (not when the whole thing is happening right in front of our eyes).

    Life in the city, indeed...

  5. That, this and everything in between. It helps me to know the rich don't have a monopoly on happiness and are often not.

  6. Life in the city, especially for those of us who grew up on a farm, is a charmed place full of opportunity. Too bad some can't hack it because of this or that, generally a pretty serious problem.
BTW in Texas if we have a handicap flag or tag the gas station operator/clerk has to fill our car if we ask. I never have asked.

  8. your poem tells the grim truth of the city.
in most major cities there are homeless people. I read in a recent report that the homeless in Tokyo were chased off the streets just before the Olympics.
