Cardinal issues morning address
Instructions for wife and children, no doubt
Sound of distant crow committee meeting
Apparently much to discuss
Rat-a-tat-tat of pileated woodpecker
You’d think he’d have a headache
Small jet landing at little airport
Race driver coming in? *
Must be morning.

Welcome morning sounds
Fall pleasantly on the ears
Time to face the day
*It is May in Indianapolis, home to the vaunted
500 Mile Race.
Love the purpose of the birdsong... they sing for themselves and not for us... and usually it's probably not so polite as the song might seem like.
ReplyDelete"distant crow committee" ... I love that. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite line: "Rat-a-tat-tat of pileated woodpecker"
I like to listen to the sounds of morning, too...especially the birdsong, the trains rolling into Reno down by the river and my dogs shaking awake. Nice one, Beverly. Well, good old Google. Sometimes she lets me publish using my Wordpress blog and sometimes she doesn't. On second thought, it's got to me male, don't you think?
ReplyDeletewonderful collection of sounds...all in the pot. Good ears Bev.
ReplyDeleteWonderful imagery and action here . Liked the personification of the cardinal.
ReplyDeleteLove the personifying of the birds! (Oh, the Indy - now THERE is sound!)
ReplyDeleteWhen you're blind you feel sorry of he deaf, when deaf you feel for the blind, when arthritic you see the paralyzed all about--so it is good to be a poet whose senses are all engaged.
ReplyDeleteThose are the greatest sounds to wake up to, birds. They sound off here about first light. If i'm awake at the time, it's nice to hear them issuing their orders. I like the way you said that. I knew those cardinals thought they were in charge
ReplyDeleteLOve all the sounds coming from the birds ~ I find it funny imagining them in a committee meeting, smiles ~
ReplyDeleteGotta love 'crow committee meetings'. Wonderful poem, Bev!
ReplyDeleteI love all the bird songs and activity in our yard. Some mornings it's like Grand Central Station out there!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the way you've described these morning sounds....especially the committee of cows :) Smiling I am. Great response to the prompt!
ReplyDeleteI usually recognize morning by the light, but I should pay attention to the sounds as well.
ReplyDeleteYes, this is the way to awaken in the morning, not the bleep, bleep, bleep of the alarm. :)
ReplyDelete"Instructions for wife and children" Great!
ReplyDeleteLove the personification of the birds!❤️
ReplyDeleteI like how you've created stories about the bird sounds...I often wonder about the meaning and feelings in their calls, sounds and songs.
ReplyDeleteI've often wondered if pileated woodpeckers get a headache. ;) And I love that you moved from the sound of birds to the race car. Nice touch.
ReplyDeleteI love the sounds of birds in the morning, even the woodpecker's which unfamiliar me mistook for successive gun reports. :-)
ReplyDeleteHappy day to you. :-)
