MAN OF COURAGE

In honor of Father's Day in the U.S.
I submit this poem to
Poets United Poetry Pantry #358
June 18, 2017

**********************

As we rode through summer breezes
The man of courage and I
He taught me still another lesson
As he had since I was just so high.

For the years had left their burden
And now he walked with a cane
And the body once strong and strapping
Now faltered and gave much pain.

I heard him not once complaining
As we passed fields of grain on our drive
But commenting on God’s bounty and sunshine
Saying, “It’s a good day to be alive”.

When I find I’m feeling sorry
For the problems and troubles I’ve had
I look to my model of courage
With humble gratitude…I love you, Dad.

  2. Love this... especially that saying:
"it's a good day to be alive"
Somehow I feel this contrasted to the song by robbie robertson... it's a good day to die.

  11. My father is still very young, and lucky enough to suffer less body pain than I do. But your pain brought to mind my grandmother, a woman who grew what she ate and took care of her own lands and animals. She was so strong, a giant to my eyes... the reason for most of the thanks I've offered to the universe. Thanks for bringing her smile and strength to my memory.

  12. A wonderful tribute to your father. Unfortunately, not everyone has/had such a father.

  13. Beautifully written – and I very much relate, having had a father whose leg pained him most of his life following an accident. Like yours, he was uncomplaining and a lover of life.
