MUG FOR CAMERA

asked us to choose one and write a poem

Maisie belonged to a group of women
Who battled the wages of sin
Called the Christian Temperance Union
They determined to save their men
From the dreadful jaws of temptation
And influence of men like Capone
The 20’s were times of turmoil
Much moreso than previously known.

It was the advent of the speakeasy
Some called them dens of iniquity
Their lure was forbidden alcohol
For those who had the  proclivity
Here the gentlemen tippled
Gambled and dabbled in crime
Tobacco and prostitution
Became the signs of the time

But Maisie survived the 20’s
Soon considered them times in her past
Women achieved the right to vote
She was proud when her vote was cast
Time moved on, and so did Maisie
No longer in the political foray
Now she and her friends come together
And talk about “back in the day”!

  2. Good call for this mugshot. She does not appear to be a miscreant. This looks like one classy dame, helping to take out the Big C.

  3. Love this. I almost did one on her. I was picturing her as a suffragette, and you touched on that and a lot of other history as well. I like your idea of her looking back and remembering the crazy times she lived in.

  9. I love that Maisie and her group of women were 'determined to save their men'. I enjoyed the lines:

'It was the advent of the speakeasy
Some called them dens of iniquity
    Their lure was forbidden alcohol
For those who had the proclivity'

I'm glad Maisie survived the twenties and got her vote.

  10. A do-gooder rather than a criminal. I like that. Most of them don't look too dangerous, so why not a Redemptionist?
