THOUGHTS ON GROWING OLD

It’s Writers’ Pantry #38 at Poets & Storytellers.

************

I lost another dear friend this week---my friend, Marie, who was a bright light in my life.  I will miss her so.  At her passing, it occurs to me I have more friends on the “other side” than I have here.  I soldier on.  It’s as if the world is a great theater and my life a stage.  Players enter stage left, and play their designated role in the drama of my life, then exit stage right, leaving memories and vestiges of themselves that make me who I am.  Go well, Marie, and tell the others I said hello.  I’ll be along one of these days. For now, there are new faces on the stage, new lessons to be learned.  In the meantime, life is good and I continue to practice for my curtain call.

  2. We'll all take a bow and leave our stories behind. Grief mixed with honoring is the way through loss for me.

  4. Oh Bev, only this morning ~ was thinking of all those I have lost in the last few years – and then realised I am nearly 81 already, and this is likely to keep on happening now. I too am glad to be alive, and basically enjoying it even in these strange times, but I guess that's the price we pay. Well, we can celebrate them and treasure the memories, as we do, but meanwhile each loss is very new when it happens.

  5. yes, life is like a stage. we enter left, say our lines (hope it's a long script), and then exit right. i like your musings on this.

  8. You are a magnificent person and writer, Bev. I suspect the spirits of your late friends are smiling at you—I would be—and saying, “Keep on adding to life’s stage. And when you arrive—not to soon—we can catch up while sharing the forever stage.”

This piece is so perfectly bittersweet. Loss always hurts. But your words are so good at soothing the heartache.

    🖤❤️
