Prairie Sonata

Crop rows seeming to reach infinity
revelled in sunshine
now thirsty for rain
rooted deep in fecund soil.
A hush falls over the prairie
awaiting promise of dark clouds
whose bellies hold precious gift of life.
A sentinel tree
watches the scene unfold
yet again
